When a loved one is elderly, or is experiencing memory loss from dementia such as Alzheimers or another neurological condition it can be very difficult for them to remember their visitors which can sometimes lead to frustration, upset and anger.
We wanted to create something that works to help all families in this difficult situation. Whether your family member or friend is still in their own home or whether they are in a nursing home, care home, home for learning or physical difficulties or in a hospice; we know it can be a distressing and worrying time. However, we hope this tool to help communication between you, your loved ones and their other visitors will help ease some of this burden.
This Visitors book has been written in large print and has space to record 150 visits, at half a page each. This will enable you to tell your friend or family member that you visited and gives a small amount of room to detail what you talked about, if you completed any activities and when you hope to be back.
You could use the space to detail a conversation and any news you have, or you could note the flowers or birds you saw on a walk You could describe a craft you made together or a meal you made them for a later time.
People with memory loss can find it extremely difficult if they can’t remember where things are or if things are moved. With this book you can also remind your loved one that you took something away to be mended or a prescription to be filled. You can also use it to remind them if you bought them a gift or something they asked for.
With short-term memory loss, your loved one may not remember you said you will fix something on your next visit and then multiple family members might try and all do the same job. By using this book other visitors will be able to see details of your visit and hopefully make things easier for everyone to communicate, in a way that will also create a lasting keepsake book of memories of your visits together.
It may help some families if professionals who visit could note down a brief summary of their visit, particularly if the person is still in their own home, without staff to note things down. Maybe there’s a need to discuss further treatment with relatives, or a progression in condition that should be noted. Even a simple ‘wound cleaned on arm’ to alert you to a possible problem, However, if you would like to keep the record purely for personal visits just cross out the part for professionals, as noted just inside the book.
We know when you love someone you just want to care for them, protect them and try to do anything to make their life easier. The simple change of a “visitors book” may help a great deal.
